The Difference between Secured and Unsecured Credit Cards

Choosing Credit Card
Secured Credit Cards

When choosing a new credit card, you may face two options - secured or unsecured cards. For some customers, the choice between these two types of plastics may be confusing. What's the difference between unsecured and secured cards if there's any and which one is better for you?

It's difficult to give a straight answer to these questions and pick a better one, as these credit cards are designed for different groups of customers and you should choose the card in accordance with your financial needs. Learn more about secured and unsecured credit cards!

First off, it's worth saying that the vast majority of credit cards are unsecured. These cards are believed to be more convenient and flexible in use compared with secured ones. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages, let's take a closer look at each type and find out what's the difference between them.

Secured credit offers are mainly designed for people with bad or no credit. It's no secret that such customers struggle to get access to credit, as most lenders deal with solvent applicants. And when it comes to unsecured credit card applications, you can be easily rejected.

Meantime, secured credit cards give peace of mind to credit applicants as these cards generally accept every applicant. It's all well and good, but if you to obtain a secured credit card you should open a savings account and deposit a certain sum of money into it.

This account will serve as collateral, and a spending limit on a secured card is set in accordance with the amount of deposit. The more you have on this account, the higher credit limit you can expect. It must be mentioned that some secured cards offer really great credit limits up to $5,000-$10,000. Not bad, right?

Secured cards are used as a credit building tool. First and foremost, you will not face serious problems when applying for this card. Secondly, you can determine your credit limit by the amount of your deposit. Thirdly, secured credit issuers regularly report major credit bureaus and it means you have all the chances to establish solid credit.

Unsecured cards do not require a secure deposit, as these cards are mostly designed for those whose credit is good or excellent. But it's worth mentioning that there are also unsecured cards for people with limited credit history, though there's no guarantee that you will be approved for the card. All the more so, it's a lender who sets your credit limit, and for customers with bad/no credit these limits will be quite low.

But anyway, you don't have to deposit hundreds of dollars to open an unsecured card. And unsecured cards offer more flexibility to cardholders, not to mention various benefits and perks. But still, which card is better?

The point is, a credit report does not reflect which card you're carrying secured or unsecured. So, feel free to choose the card that suits your financial situation most. If you've had problems with credit approval and your credit rating is far from ideal, you'd better start with secured cards. But if you enjoy good credit, enjoy multiple benefits of unsecured cards!
